Key Stage 1 consists of children in Years 1 and 2 (ages 5-7). The learning in these year groups builds on the good practice in Foundation Stage, with a strong early emphasis on play-based, active learning, building towards more formal group work by the end of Year 2. Children in Key Stage 1 are taught using a curriculum that blends the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) with the Literacy and Maths frameworks from schools in England. Our phonics teaching follows the 'Letters and Sounds' programme used in the United Kingdom, supporting children to listen to, copy and talk about sounds and to use their knowledge of letters and sounds to begin reading and writing words as soon as they are ready.
Many of the children joining us in Key Stage 1 join us having had no previous school experience. We consider each child’s needs and starting points to ensure the curriculum we provide supports them in making the best progress possible.
